I generally get the sense the mangaka wrote themselves into a corner and are trying to get out of it by throwing enough strangeness at it that a new direction opens up. It's a valid technique if done within moderation. Even if it works though, it's kind of a one-time only "get out of corner free" card per story, lest the narrative itself become an unrecognizable mess.
