Back when I read the oneshot with this one as a cover, I thought it's gonna be a wholesome supernatural romance ahaha.

Given how the twatter advert says chapter 2 is about fish-faced monsters, I'm guessing this will be another series where protagonist finds monster of the week, monster of the week is invincible unstoppable force, protagonist barely escapes, nothing is addressed, move on to next monster of the week. It fits the genre, at least, and I'm still interested, but the pattern will probably hold and I wonder what this series will do to differentiate itself.

Okay, that's some damned freaky imagery. First with the stalker, then with the tengu. Like, what is the Tengu? It's so freakish I thought it was some kind of alien. Why did it leave the protagonist alone the first time? Does the Tengu have modesty? Did it want to impress her by killing her stalker? Does she have a thing for freaky-as-hell bird monsters? There was a window in its way, so either she or it had to open the window, and given the lack of struggle, she left willingly with it?

If anybody does any horror RPG like Call of Cthulhu, this would make an excellent scenario (probably).

I think she went with it because she was already grabbed by it once. The start of the chapter shows her soul or at least part of it being drained by the tengu, and perhaps this causes the tengu to have some degree of control over her. The other victims we see are the stalker who gets physically grabbed, and Manaka's friend who in the photo also looked like she was getting her soul drained out, but also physically disappeared.

As usual Spiraphobia has excellent taste.

Well, the Tengu had been watching the MC since the start of the manga, given creepy eyes and noises, just like the Stalker. But I think there's some element of willingness on the part of those disappeared. The Editor's friend expressed some element of hopefulness that the Tengu's Marriage was a happy one just before she was grabbed. The Stalker was returned, after a fashion, and was left dismantled as a gift for the MC. The Tengu did try to grab the MC when it'd be easier, but let go because there was no element of choice or willingness on her part, no matter how misread?

But this manga is really good with the details. I noticed the tree's branches being cut on my first read-through, but didn't notice how the Stalker tested the branch's durability right in front of the MC the first time she invited him over. I'm fairly confident that the Stalker delivered all the gifts up until the reveal.

The Editor also seems to know all the signs, so it feels likely that her friend had been watched by the Tengu for a while and she had been making note before her friend disappeared.

What bothers me most is that the Tengu appears to be crying in the 3rd image of its face, as its extending its hand/proboscis. This manga has Details, man, and that is throwing me. I don't think it's from the stress of shooting out its grabber, it does it too quickly most of the time.

This is a 44-page story and there's so much to take away from it!

I agree that there is so much to unpack here. Even the chapter cover is worth another look after reading the chapter - it is a picture of Manaka and her friend, but Manaka is depicted as an adult, and the friend is holding a...thing. It feels very deliberate. And then right off the bat, in page 1 we get a jumpscare of a pair of monstrous eyes, but then the 2nd panel has a silhouette of stalker dude that only becomes obvious on a reread. I too think all the gifts were just the stalker dude doing his thing, and the Tengu only gave her one gift - stalker dude's dead body.

It's also interesting that stalker dude is apparently a relative of the Tengu temple's priests. When he was about to do the deed he also mentioned that he's doing the Tengu bride-taking himself. Now, since he also gets taken care of by the actual Tengu, it might just be him being a psycho when he said that but I think there's a subtle implication through the story that the temple family is suspicious, which is why Manaka has been investigating them.

Really great opening, thanks for another great pick and TL.

The Tengu looks kinda cool in a freaky way too.
