It looks like since the English language is stuck with using Greek roots for all the dumb phobias, they strung together the Greek words for Kyoto (Kioto) and students (phoititon) into a custom phobia. Which is kind of a terrible decision tbh. In Japanese it's just the kanji for "KyotoU students" and "phobia" put together, so I feel like they could've just done "KyotoU-student-phobia" without worrying about being consistent with the Greek roots.

Claustrophobia is "closed space + phobia". If someone is a "zoophobe" Japanese says they have "animal + phobia". Arachnophobia = "spider + phobia". And English has a long history of making up both common and niche phobia names this way, like Triskaidekaphobia (the fear of the number 13). which Japnaese wikipedia translates as "13 phobia" ("13恐怖症"). So there's a linguistic precedent in English which makes it sounds more natural to me. If there can be the term "Koumpounophobia" (fear of buttons), then the English language can handle "Kioto" (Kyoto) + "foititis" (University student).

As an additional consideration, sometimes Japanese uses "phobia" in contexts where in English we're more likely to use other constructions. For example, "数学恐怖症の教師たち" (lit. "Math - Phobia - (Genitive) - Teachers) has been translated to/from the English equivalent of "teachers with math anxiety". Which was another angle we considered.

Another part of the rationale behind the translation choice that the term is that we explain the term in the first chapter as Kashio's made-up term for himself (when he thinks to himself that he has [KyotoU - Student - Phobia]. Unfortunately, it's been months since those last chapters when the series is published weekly, so hopefully we can get back onto a more consistent schedule so these things feel less out-of-nowhere.

Yeah, the time lag definitely got me, I didn't remember that coming up in the first chapter at all, so it showing up in this chapter after so long definitely confused the hell out of me, lol.
