Yeah, that's no way to raise a child. Independence comes from actually making choices, even if they're wrong. Especially if they're wrong. You can offer suggestions, but don't force it.

"You're just like your father."
A good line if you want to disrespect two people at once.

Law school is probably one area where you'd expect to get a job in that direction. Becoming a backpacker just seems like any subject would've been wrong for that person.

Surprise hug. For both of them.

If a guy asks a question, that's the question he wants an answer to.

The mom is honestly the one not thinking things through. Econ and business majors tend towards soul crushing office jobs, near guaranteeing a miserable existence. Even if she gets a job at an office, Honda will have her degree in a field that gave her years of joy and metal stimulation.

Damn, of all the couples, I did NOT see Yamada and Nishi being the ones to go that far that quickly.

As someone who went to university, I have to say, it's a scam. You don't use around 80% of what you've learnt in your job, and you really could've learnt the other 20% on the job. It's just a sort of way to gatekeep jobs. And then on top of that, the job still pays shit as well. I wanted to study applied biology and genetics at university, but thought "that's not gonna make me money" and now I'm in a field I don't particularly like and still not making a comfortable living.

People who move through life picking the option that seems most "secure" and "what will will make me money" with no actual interest in the field often find themselves emotionally and personally dissatisfied by the time they hit 30. Their job and personal lives just don't provide them with emotional fulfilment.

You can't find fulfillment if you're not a little bit interested in what you're doing.

Sorry but in this one mom's right. They're going to spend tens of thousands of dollars for nothing as a lit major.

Exactly. You need to enjoy the process of working, not just the end goal (unless you genuinely think it's worth the effort). I switched from a high-stress, high-pay job to a low-stress low-pay job I don't even work full time at (but I earn more than enough to sustain myself with spare), and it's made life and health better.

From an employment perspective, it is far better to do a degree that you'll get good marks and network well in. It doesn't really matter what the degree is in, future employers would rather someone with consistently high marks and networked well with others over someone with bad marks and no connections.

Unless you're very intelligent, you will struggle to get through a degree and find work in a field that you have no interest in. You wouldn't have any interest in building connections and relationships that would give you further and new opportunities. That is why people struggle to find jobs despite getting degrees that are "job guaranteed". Their marks are mediocre, they have no interest in the field and they didn't network.

University is valuable in that it will open up peer networks, future connections and the method and resources to learn specialized knowledge in that field. However, it is not a path for everyone and there are other ways to proceed with your future.

The important thing is to be interested in what you do.
