There really isn't any annoying side characters that cause unnecessary conflicts for the love line. The highlight is the push and pull of the two leads.
Male lead falls first and pursues the female lead in a fairly shameless manner. It's quite funny in how thick-skinned he is in his pursuit. The female lead has a very suave and cool personality. (She's called Director Wan by her fans because of how manly and handsome she can look and be) She doesn't give into the male leads pursuits easily and is somewhat reserved. It's let on that her childhood was rough in that her mother died when she was 9 and her father immediately brought home his mistress and illegitimate son afterwards. So in a sense she was "abandoned" by her father, but luckily her grandmother, the Ji Family matriarch, took her and raised her instead.
Thus, she doesn't trust people easily, but she isn't a debbie downer either. She lets the male lead pursue her, occasionally giving in to him. Eventually she can't resist anymore and they get together.
Story is pretty unfettered with different emotional highlights along the way.
