They were Beast kingdom Soldiers, and were likely going to shake down the weak looking mercenary. So of course finding said merc had something tasty they would immediately report it to their commander to either try to poach the cook or lean on the mercs for holding on on premium supplies.

They're working with the New Beast army and these soldiers are from that side. Also related to what Asagi (what seems to be the team member we'll focus on for the current and next chapter) was doing, which was getting intel on New Beast

That's exactly what I would expect will happen. TBH I'm more surprised that the merc company was so sloppy with their camp security. Sure I could somewhat understand having a gambling tent near the outter boarder of their area, but intermixing different military camps seems like a good way for theft and fights to occur.
