Overall, I prefer the 1,000 increment as it makes it easier for the lay person to make mental calculations. The kid in me still like the idea of having numbers like 19,856 million billion trillion dollars: $19,856,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. Instead of something relatively boring but far more sensible like 19.856 nonillion dollars.
