Yugami is actually very concerned with his feeling of guilt.

Chihiro jumped to a conclusion, based on a rather large data set of Yugami's not unthinking, but incredibly self-focused actions. Good on her for realizing the mistake.

There has been a concerted effort to increase autism awareness and more adult diagnoses, especially in Western countries; but in the age of social media more awareness means more disinformation and more bandwagoning, which may explain your perception of these issues as a fad.
Any reduction in discrimination and improvement in access to support for those who need it is to be welcomed but in my opinion the autistic|not autistic dichotomy is flawed. A better approach is the neurodiversity model. I should point out that at the moment the medical model better serves 'severely dysfunctional' autistic people and neurodiversity is often presented as a special interest group for high functioning psychiatric 'disorders'. In my opinion there needs to be reconciliation between these two positions and a broader inclusion of all personality traits in a general theory of neurodiversity.
As for me personally, I had an Asian schooling without being aware that my parents considered getting me 'checked' but aware that I was different. After moving to a Western country and having problems at college I got a 'diagnosed' as an adult. I am ambivalent about it...
