and I know people who are living this way doesn't have a long way to go, but I can't help but be amazed by it.

oh wow, people like Yugami don't have a long way to go? This is where you are so wrong. People like Yugami can become the best entrepreneurs, scientists/engineers. Because they think with their own head and they go where they want to go. Since they don't follow others, others will follow them - and this manga has shown perfectly why - because people like Yugami bring results, even though if they are not liked. And people like that are very very valuable and can be very successful.

So instead of not having a long way to go, in the right environment they can go further than anyone else.

Maybe what he meant is more about how now people careers are becoming more n more tied to connections, rather than results. Being an asshole but connected to many people like watanabe has their own merit, since he can have a lot of information channel at his disposal (which is an important skill nowadays).

As for Yugami, looking at young version of Steve Job, I think we can learn that being a genius is not enough to create a company, simply because u can't work alone. People may follow u at first because u bring results, but if u r considered as an asshole in daily life, they will leave u and try to find another people who is less asshole with the same skill (which is a lot).

Smart people basically are egoistic n prideful because they think a lot more complex than average people. So yeah, they won't just follow genius asshole people...

@rennov But Yugami is not a prideful genius asshole... ? people may label him as this but that's the people's own problem.

creating a company indeed needs a better skill at talking with people, but if you start small getting around with people is good enough and Yugami is very good at that (remember the lady who kissed him on the cheek, or the story of the fingerbath box that Chihiro fell for?)
scientist/engineer route would be easiest though - he can work on his own.
Nontheless point remains, people like Yugami can make more of a difference in life. (that's what i meant by going further)

They all got their own flaws, but Yuugami is honest and earnest and kind and never hurts anyone (intentionally).
But more importantly, he's strong.
And seeing Chihiro standing up for him is quite something, she's really grown. We've come a long way.
