I think Yugami is a very Ayn Rand-esque character, and the comic did a great job showing how such a character can be realistic and fun without turning into a power fantasy. While he's absolutely honest and completely dedicated himself to what he cares about, the same personality trait and world view makes him a massive pain in the ass, ending up with effectively zero friends and not even admirers despite being the ace of the baseball club, good looking and talented. To everyone he's just an asshole but upon closer inspection, we can see his merit as a person, hence the ultra conformist becoming independent through her interaction with him. This is great writing of such an archetype, the best I have seen in comics, much better than the award winning Hibiki at least.
