Personally, I wasn't pleased with the first chapter. I think the opening pseudo-essay would have been better off as an author's note or an extra chapter. I'd rather see the manga starts by setting the scene and the stage, rather than the theory.

But that's a minor quibble in the long run. Now that the introductory stuff is over, we can get in on the real deal: another one of Higashimura Akiko's lively, quirky, interesting female leads -- except this time as a hero of a bloody age. The Dragon of Echigo himself, uh, herself. Rawr.

P.S. The way she draws Nobunaga is...roguishly attractive. lol.

Oh, so this manga is based off the historical theory that Useugi Kenshin was a Woman. That's not exactly fiction or reimagined then but okay.

(As in the author is not ass pulling this at random. Female Japenese lords were indeed a thing before the Tokugawa banned female lords and started enforcing their laws like the caste systems.

It's not implausible a clan would change their founder's gender to avoid being wiped out.)

@crazybars "A clan would change their founder's gender to avoid being wiped out"? Uesugi Kenshin died way before the Tokugawa comes into power. And Ii Naotora , a female daimyo, fought under Tokugawa Ieyasu. I haven't heard of any female lord beside Naotora and Tachibana Ginchiyo who wasn't a daimyo but clan head. Female can be clan head but being daimyo is another thing.

@miyako19

Go read the author's notes on the Uesugi Kenshin succession problems and Tokugawa Outright banning Female lords etc.

The Useugi Kenshin is a Women theory is essentially rumor anyways, all circumstantial evidence and no concrete evidence. Given the context the author explains, it was a plausible theory with no concrete proof possible. The author covers it.

You got me on the clan head thing. I honestly don't know enough about the nitty gritty to argue the details on that.

As for the Tokugawa banning female lords thing and trying to remove women from positions of power, that was a real thing. It was a movement called neo-confucianism introduced in the Edo (Tokugawa) period to systematically remove women from positions of power and reinforce Confucian gender role ideas. Remember how women were banned from Kabuki? Yes, that was partially due to Neo Confucianism as well.

That trope where female Samurai ladies always had Male bodyguard escorts? Require by law under the Tokugawa, the less romantic part was they had to have special travel permits to go through checkpoints and many of these Sekisho checkpoints blocked access and restricted Women from going through them. Local women could be allowed through certain gates, but many of these checkpoints simply blocked all women from going through them.

This was so bad, there were things called "Women's roads" that women HAD to take. Pretty dumb when you think about it, but the Tokugawa were all about castes, controlling people and enforcing social classes that you couldn't move between.

In fact, this Neo-Confucianism thing is prevalent in modern Japan to this very day, with massive repercussions.

If there is not some UST between her and Shingen, I will be sorely disappointed. They are rivals who respected one another more than anything in the world and I am craving that connection between them.

I asked to the people on the scanlation group and they said they're pretty much dead at this point and this works does not appear on their works on discord either so unless somebody else picks it we're screwed.

@moichispa it's still me and 13lacklily, it's just that our original scanlation group is dead, so I made a new one.

Yeah found out about it after calling everybody else here. Scanlation groups are born and die, that is a natural thing in life but I'm so so glad you still came back to this series.
