Yep, the reported guy died around that time, and the Izakaya died long before then. They both have been hanging around far beyond their deaths. We don't even have a proper date for when the fatty died.

With the way things are going maybe that wouldn't even stop the plot. It's not like you leave if you die in this place. And the curse is aiming for her soul too, so even death wouldn't be a release.

MAN. I adore that. A curse that makes souls just... stagnate in place. Being a ghost while fully convinced you're alive.... it almost even gives the sense that because he was about to be confronted by someone who'd be able to tell he was dead, suddenly he couldn't make it to see her.....
Something about realizing you're dead after patiently and good-naturedly handling being lost has such a sense of despair to it.
