One major change shown in this chapter as compared to the original "Sign of Four" story. Tonga, in this chapter is shown as a white male when in the original version of the story, is actually a very small, dark-skinned person (he called him an Islander), with a misshapen head. The footprints in the house in a previous chapter was also modified to being "regular" sized shoe-print, when in reality, the were actual footprints made by a very small person. Of course, in order to properly use the "blackmail" situation, they changed Mary's situation. There are other changes as well, the last major one being that once the treasure box (now empty) has been returned to Mary, this is the time that Watson confesses his love to Mary.
