It's pretty much this. Most people don't like talking about their exes so it's kind of understandable to embellish a few things regarding that, if only to avoid bringing up uncomfortable subjects. The question is whether or not she is a habitual liar, and given all the gravitas over this it might be where the author is headed.
Curious to see where it all goes but ngl, I kinda miss the "goofy ghost buddy" days of this comic.

the lie is the issue
he would probably get over it if she was up front about it, but the lie is a red flag because shes willing to lie blatantly for no apparent reason
she may have a reason but its not apparent to him nor us
if someone lies, it kinda means you cant trust what they say, and thats really not good if you plan to live the next 50 years with them
