Probably not the case but what if the goddess let him take it because none of the female knight's squad are the hero but had figured out a loophole to remove it. More likely is the unlikely hero trope, it does give me The Hero is Dead vibes.

Did the Goddess make it, or is it a demon sword pretending to be a holy sword as it makes its escape from the Demon King?

REALLY hesitant here. The “on paper” of it is interesting, but really read these characters for a sec: it feels like the author isn’t committed to them outside of appearances. There is a “will” within each being, meaning the sword and the thief, but their justifications for that will are surprisingly weak. For a story that seems focused on character over world, the outlook for those characters feels like the author wants them in an ENTIRELY different field, and only considers the current story as a smokescreen till they get there.

I’m all for unexpected twists and a new interpretation of a hero but, like sitting in a seat that’s manufactured at an angle, there is a fundamental slant to this foundation I don’t feel wise trying to settle into.
