I feel like the progression is similar to what anime Working! does. After series of gags, it reached to status quo so much, it has to be broken. Kinda rare troupe, but it's fast, effective and tbh not too far-fetched from romcom root (preventing serious developement being too long)

When you think about it, 'dating' exists solely for the people to get to know each other and deciding whether they're fit to be spouses.

Those two, as childhood friends, have known each other for 10 years. Maybe they've changed and/or have some things they don't know about each other yet, but still, they've known each other enough that 'skipping those steps' was necessary.
