People who read ahead will find out the answer soon.. but I'll go ahead and say it here anyways:

It seems that he not only rips off his horn and wings when disguising as a human, but supresses his physiological demon traits which includes his superhuman strength—and an even stronger second form—that would normally let him effortlessly crush just about anyone in a raw fist fight as seen in later chapters. This leaves him to only rely on magic in "human mode". More likely that most decently-strong fighters could easily beat him in close-quarters combat when he's holding back his demonic nature.

Also, just typical manga comedy to make characters "scary" in other ways than just being strong.
