It's a frequent mistake authors make.
In this case, they wanted us to realize how amazing a beast tamer the MC was, so they recruited other beast tamers for comparison.
But, as you say, this makes no sense in-character, so the author overwrote character consistency for the sake of making a point.

@Dan1249 the question was more like : Why he can do that? we all know he can tame more than just 1 or 2, but why? and because he is the MC is not a valid answer.

We don't know yet, but it's been hinted that his hometown had several exceptional tamers (by other places' standards) and he learned from several of them. He didn't even think of himself as exceptional because those were his standards.

So the question is... are there two different kind of tamers, or do they all have the same potential but the world's standards are just too low compared to his hometown?
