That "dead" one I'm kind of wondering if it's not just a mistranslation/double meaning and "lost" would have been a better take.

Lloyd hasn't improved because Merlin beat him so hard growing up he has brain damage. He's fundamentally incapable of learning anything. It doesn't matter how many white mages he meets, how many times he sees their magic, what they say, or what any other person says. He thinks he's bad at white magic and anyone who says otherwise is not worth listening to because only he's correct. It's impossible to be this stupid unless you're brain damaged or brainwashed.
