Just how rotten was the city wall that the defenders couldn't rely on it? Of course the wall was drawn really thin, but that's just the usual manga graphical mistake and shouldn't affect functionality. Although perhaps the wall really was decorative this time. Quite a funny frontier town in that case. Maybe most of the wall budget was embezzled. Probably the hero's grandpa was responsible for it, haha.
IRL walls are pretty thin. That is often misinterpreted by mangaka and writers for God knows what reason as being frail. No, it's that stone used for defenses is really damn durable. To the point that some ancient fortifications are still used by modern militaries and are still effective even against modern weapons.

Their battle line is stupid. Arrows are not indirect-fire weapons. Put them in place of the shieldmen with a line of regular infantry and have them fall back behind the troops when the enemy gets past the moat until the threat is repelled, then go out and shoot some more. The mages should be scattered behind the line, not in a single large block on one flank. Speaking of which, their flanks are effectively unprotected. Have the shieldmen protect the flanks with heavier magic support. Otherwise, even if the monsters aren't smart enough to go around, their sheer numbers will flow around the front and spill through the flanks.

Of course they could also use the damn giant wall and towers...

I had the same thought at page 3, when he said: "Well, I guess master was a weirdo..."

Boy, you think a town has tax money to lose to build statues of weirdos just for the sake of it. So, author, step up your game, your MC is so badly written for now.
Yes that makes it so weird in this manga. Of course his master is better than him if she is so good that they have created a statue for her...How can he think that she should be the normal person standard???

Every time I see a medieval battle where they put the infantry in front of the walls, a vein in my brain explodes.
On top of that, they made a pit, filled it with water, and didn't put it under the wall!!!!!!

Walls are used to protect your troops and give them an advantage in battle. It makes no sense not to use your fortifications, especially in a battle where you are outnumbered.

They way the positioned the troops raises eyebrows. Unless you know which part will get broke through and not having a lot of troops, they should protect the flanks with shields/melee troops
