The answer is that the author just wanted a "Happy ending" without earning it. Same reason Asuka comes back to life in SAO literally by the power of love.

Imo this lacklaster ending is just like the previous chapter. Whenever this manga was axe'd or not, I feel like there should've been a better way than going "O'LAWD, Zi'End".

There were 99 lives, #1 to #99.

Number #100 was Akira on second chance/ extra turn.

At least for SAO they added some extra lore saying that you had like 30/60 sec after dying before the game fried your brain so you could use one of the rare resurrection items that spawned on events. Here they said death was a result of the strain caused by the game being too in sync with your brain that the shock of dying would literally kill you in real life. Plus Akira was dead for a few hours until they reached the wall dude.

There were 99 lives.

99 girls hooked up to machines. 96 of them had their brains fried. The POS weeb is the 97th life. 98 and 99 are the survivors.
