Even if lending books for free would significantly impact the sales, it would still be a non-issue: the libraries don't operate in order to increase the revenue of writers and publisher, they exist to promote culture and provide free access to knowledge to whomever want to acquire it. This is because it is widely accepted that an accultured population creates a wealthy and thriving society, which in turn benefits authors and publishers way more than the 2 or 3 sale they "lose" due to libraries.

Some books, including some that are simply entertainment, are published only because of anticipated sales to libraries guarantee profitability.

However, others are never published because sales to libraries would be insufficient, and lending by libraries would crowd-out other sales, so that the publisher would realize a loss.

And some of the books that are beastly expensive would be much less so if no sales were made to libraries.

The idea that an individual author is guaranteed to realize a net benefit from people reading his or her work even if he consequently has fewer sales is simply wrong.

Tho I am in the position that ease of access does benefit sales, because I (and I'm pretty sure many others) have discovered so many amazing manga that I would've never heard of otherwise!

But also I guess our position is different because we rely on these websites and translators to even read these... And although I do have a pretty sizable collection, I don't buy every manga I read here...

So yeah, complicated stuff
