Okay, the light novel is peak, though it often repeat same information.

So, another reason why they're so devoted is that, Wolca is actually a badass guy. The move he did to stand up on his last stand, made the wound on his leg to be scorched and cauterized, forcing them to amputate it. How do you even react to that information? That a guy on the brink of dead forced himself to stand up and burned his leg? That's just crazy

The light novel is now licensed but yea this is about the girls who got PTSD because of this event. This world is based on a dark fantasy manga that the MC has read. His party were originality fodder just to die for the manga's protagonist to show how dark this world is.

The girls are scared of Wolka dying while Wolka himself just wants to master the "I am the storm that is approaching" technique. That sword technique doesn't exist in the world but since he's in fantasy world, he basically is inventing it and gained admirers. The girls always overthink Wolka's attention. For example, one of them think he has some dark backstory but its just a dude that doesn't like bad endings and enjoys mastering the blade.
Utterly based, one thing all these yandere harem stories are missing is a HOPE Chad full of MOTIVATION.

Usually hate harem, but the author might do something interesting with this. So I might as well stick around.
The story description feels like author's desperately yelling "I promise it's not slop, I really worked on the emotional aspects of their interactions and their descent into being mentally unstable, please give it a try" in the limited space he was given. Which is kinda funny, but I am willing to give the story the benefit of the doubt and see if the author fulfills his promise or it all devolves into the usual harem shit.

i dont usually like isekai harem where the party is just MC + yandere girls. because the girls will always disturb and ignore MC personal space, words, intention, or blow out of proportion what was seemingly normal plan into something worth fretting over. thats kinda annoying to see.
though i dont mind if they are more of devoted kind and support him like they would a loving family member toward a disabled person, rather than unhealthy obsession.

seems many people hyping it up, i'll give it the benefit of doubt

Peak Otaku. The guy is fighting for his life but somehow he can remember three pages of a weird manga that he read almost 20 years earlier.

Well i was expecting some dark twist. Like the girls are actually dead and now MC is possessed by the reaper.

Nah, that's just show much the scene traumatized him.

Oot here but something similar happened to me. When i was young i saw a Rape scene followed with an execution scene, in a korean manhwa called "Rebirth". This was around 2002-2003. It traumatized me so much that i still vividly remember the scenes up to this day, 2 decades later.

I heard of this one, the girl isn't a yandere... but they're deep in guilt and truama to the point they basically broken.

MC may save their life... but it also cost their heart since he make them realize how much important MC is to them and how much their failure cost him his future.
I mean the word they used in the title is "Yanda" (became unwell), which is the same kanji as yandere, but people forget that yandere doesn't necessarily mean "will kill out of jealousy". Rather, it means mentally unwell, an unhealthy obsessive love born out of love, a love that can manifest in unhealthy ways, not just towards the person they love, but also sometimes towards themselves, which I think is what's going on here. Not to say I think badly of them or anything, they just fit pretty squarely into what is defined as yandere.

That said, I also don't blame them. If my precious friend and party member lost an eye and leg and was on the verge death for two weeks and then woke up and said something like "I don't regret it, I'll do it again", I also would never allow them to leave my line of sight.

Is there a translated LN or WN to read since I get the feeling this might get dropped like the other couple dozen mangas that have two english chapters and then jack shit for years?
Not much change as MC said the dead of his team is just a prologue. It meant to show to player that this game is dark and nightmare stuff.

MC team is supposed to be a throwaway "veteran" team that got destroyed in prologue... and with MC out of the picture... they're basically broken as a functional team now.

Totally forgot this was getting an adaptation, super hyped. It’s one of my favorites on Kakuyomu because the updates are always super meaty and the writing quality stands head and shoulders above its peers. Not sure how much well that’ll translate to manga, but they seem to get that what makes this story work is the awkward balance between the comedy of Wolca’s inner monologue and the tragedy of his traumatized companions.

From Wolca’s POV, he just beat the bad end. He’s won, so while he’s injured, he’s happy because he’s defied fate and it rules. From his companions’ POV this is the worst outcome imaginable. At least with death they could grieve, right, but instead he’s injured and there’s a looming question about his future as a swordsman and what might have been since the maiming is seemingly permanent.

And the kicker is what you can already see—since Wolca is just a guy, and not some epic hero, he steps on verbal landmines and isn’t perfectly capable of comforting his companions. Instead they have certified yandere moments and he freaks out internally, which is tragicomedy gold.

As an aside for those comfortable with vague spoilers about the general outlook of future cast members: a good chunk of them become emotionally unstable because of Wolca’s injuries, are emotionally unstable/have tragic backstories for non-Wolca reasons but gravitate towards him, or just have a screw loose. He’s like a magnet for weird characters and it rocks
Late to this but is there actual romance later on?

If this guy is a “happy ending” loving absolutist then tell me WHY he was reading a DARK FANTASY and KEPT READING IT to the story’s end?!!
in LN,
MC mentioned that he got baited by Vol.1 cover and thought it's your usual happy go lucky story with good art.

then he got slapped in the face by artist's disgusted fetish at how everyone in story is riding on misery train including the "protag" (kinda like goblin slayer type? his village got destroyed by monster and PTSD kick in so hard that he vow to kill every monster and barely interacted with people, usually on the hunt for next monsters)

but because the art is too good to drop(manwha moment?), so MC just shut his brain off while reading it. that's why it took him 17 years to realize it's that manga world.

(bro can't even rmb protag name and keep calling him berserker or something)

kinda? I read LN until vol.2

and it shows that the feeling is kinda mutual? his party liked him even before incident(It spiked up to dangerous one after incident) and he's also treasure them that much that he's willing to sarc his life for their safety.

it's just that MC trained a bit too hard(spartan training from grandpa since age4 or6) to the point that he has some screw loose that he didn't even notice it.(sword maniac)

and the girls got guilt trip so hard that it took them to Vol.2 to finally clear thing out(before that, they kinda don't listen to him cuz they're afraid that he will sarc his life and die next time)

tbf, it's because vol.1 is being used to introduce his party and his friends in first half and how MC try his best to function again without stuck in bed, to ease his party's worry(and to keep training his Iai) in latter half.

while vol.2, before they get a heart to heart conversation, they got roped in yet another trouble so it took a while before they could clear things out a bit.
