@kenkagejack The definition is Isekai is that it has to be a different world, neither reincarnation in the same world nor time travel are isekai. It is a subgenre of fantasy, but not all fantasy is isekai, so while something like Smartphone is Isekai (since he comes from a different world) something that is literally the same as smartphone, but with a person that gets reincarnated/time travels in the same world wouldnt be Isekai, even though both are pretty much identical aside from the point of origin of the character. (Complications only begin if we talk about virtual worlds, sao and stuff like that, but same world? No iseaki, no matter what.)
PS: Smartphone feels like a parody of the typical OP-MC-Fantasy-(Isekai)-Stories i guess, not 100% if it is tho.

Did you see the look in his eyes? Looks like someone that made a deal with a devil and is now powerless.

@alidan I totally agree.

Also am I one of the few people that actually like isekai with my smartphone?

I have to reload the same page multiple times if I want to read it in a long strip to load those who don't appear. Using chrome in windows10. Ver 80.0.3987.163 (Official Build) (64-bit).
But idk if its a connection to mangadex or the browser.
Single page works fine.

@Micro
I want to believe this is mostly because isekai is the new go to genre, but it's almost every single one I see has people in comments shitting on them.

The smartphone anime was handled as a gag comedy, and i think it did the right choice there, apparently things happen that are a threat to him later on, but early on he steamrolls.
the manga goes into more details without going into gag comedy territory, but it also plays things off like they could be problems.
The ln, I honestly forget if I read it, if I did I didn't go further then where the manga is... so it may be foregetable or I may have not read it... dont know what that says, either its highly forgettable or its a very easy read and the manga covers things fairly well so they blur.

I like the franchise, but it takes a long time for things to get set up to the point its engaging if that makes sense.

@Silwith : it would be easier if we just called it portal fantasy, because that is pretty much what it is, a subset of/japanese name for portal fantasy with some extra common tropes (that still exist in portal fantasy, but are just more common). Unfortunately there are to many idiots do not understand that a literal translation of a term/label does not always convey much if any of its meaning. A good example of the translation not containing everything for the genre is "Film Noir" since the translation has nothing to show that the genre is about crime stories.

@Micro: No, but like most it is a story you have to approach from the right mindset/starting point to enjoy, and there are to many vocal idiots who do not understand the difference between not liking something and it actually being bad. Personally I do not like BL ,but I do not make a seen of my hate for it of deride the stories and its readers.

@alidan : Ya, the anime only has a couple things that connect to the worlds problems, including the after credits scene of the last episode (which iirc introduces a character in the opening credits the entire series). But the series starts as slice of life and slowly morphs into having a large scale war. But one thing I will have to say about the WN, not sure if the manga is there yet so
it treated the slave collar thing much more accurately then other series do, just look at how much of a hell hole the 1 nation that could make (and did use them) is. Unless there is a serious balancing factor the existence of such devices will lead to those in power trying to put them on everyone, by any means they can

@sjmcc13 spoilered because its tangentially related to your spoiler but more complaining about comments
slavery is another thing that always irks me in the comments, everyone is morally against it, so when it comes up and the main character deals with it, oh the bitch fits about slavery go on for days and ruin comment sections.
I mean lets look at it more realistically for the time periods/tech levels.
If you can enforce slavery, as in punishments happen regardless of people seeing an infraction, then you more or less have an effective prison system. because let's be honest, if food and effort is an actual resource, you are going to have prisoners work a hell job till they die and replace or you are going to just kill them outright because its easier.
we have, at least first world nations, stopped conquering places in the world for land or resources, but we did do that in the past and if the people who got enslaved when we didn't were not enslaved, they were/would have been out right murdered.
lets also look at things like debtor prisons.

now enforced slavery with punishments that happen regardless of visible infractions now makes people capable of being in 'jail' not not in shit conditions or working to death, but instead being a cheap labor force that can reasonably work off their crime or debt depending on how serious it is.

It would also allow a war to have happened with an enemy nation and not needing to perform an ethnic cleansing

slavery is only really as ethically reprehensible as the story's portray it, but every single time it's brought up people have to be up in arms about it. The fact of the matter is the people who would abuse it would abuse it regardless, and the people who wouldn't abuse it now just kill the people who would have been slaves because its cheaper and less resource intensive.

@kenkagejack How to say... this is a proper 'serious' op reincarnation story that is written badly, whereas Smartphone is an op isekai for the lolz and not meant to be taken seriously. That's what I meant of it being a parody, of the isekai genre. Nothing to do with whether it's time travel or whatever. Also time travel =/= isekai.

How convenient that the serial killer just so happened to be out at that time of night, in that specific location, ready to kill, and wasn't choosing specific targets to begin with.

@sjmcc13 Well, thats the thing with genres, they overlap, are often not specified enough ect, i guess "transported into a different enviroment" would hit it best if we go with a term? :D That would include, virtual, time and place :D

@alidan I dont get the "slavery is inherently bad" anyway tbh, in my opinion we should have a slavery-system for criminals, now we just pay for them being locked away or to be killed in some countrys... better let them work. Plus, while we avoid the term "slave", what else are people in countrys with bad social systems like the US, that have to work 14 hours a day in 3 jobs to live? They arent free right? I mean, sure, you can decide to starve to death instead to work, but slaves can do that too... so, in principle our societies have slaves, we just dont call them slaves... i think our system is inherently worse than many of the isekai-slavery-systems (like, the ones that portray it a bit better, with poor people that can become slaves, and then get cared for with housing, protection and food for their workforce from the master, while in our society they work life 14 hours a day and than a company dont needs them anymore, fires them, and they sit on the street...)

@Micro Well, the mangas art is bad, but i liked the anime, just some feel good op story, no much drama, but not anything needs to be drama right? :D

The real world slavery doesn't work because of rampant abuse potential along with needing to watch people at all times due to no way to automatically punish infractions.

now, in the us, you don't have to work 14 hour days unless you royally mess up, there are people like my dad who genuinely do it because he loves his job, is actually somewhat critical to the company, and loves to see if he can force those numbers just a bit higher on his pay check, but where he works has raw dicked him kind of hard, he could quit and coast the rest of his life.

some people have 5 kids with 3 people and gg thats your life now

and there are people like me, who so long as I have 100mbit internet, I can live in the sticks and not care, I could effectively work a part time job and have spending money.
the only places america is shitty to work and live is in cities where everything is ridiculously expensive, and the only reason you live there is your commute time is worth more than a few thousand a month, or you got a rent controlled deal, anyone not in these situations is borderline retarded for staying in the city's, 5000$ buys you trailer, 10000$ buys you a plot of land to put it on, and if you can show employment a 15000$ loan is easy for someone with dubious credit to get.

granted things may change in the next 2 years, but that's more or less how you can get by now. and on the part of the part time job, that would put you in an income bracket where you could get free or heavily subsidized healthcare.

Is it just me who found this chapter cringeworthy? I mean, sure he's nice, but more like extremely naive with hero complex. That kind of guy would've died early irl.

@wouw to show how aammmaaazzzzinnnngggglyyy kind the mc is so that his SSS status will not be called into question lol
@Eclat123 that is true, and if he is that "kind" then how did he even survive with all the shit that is happening irl - like he would have gotten arrested for very active and maybe even forceful peaceful protest against the authorities before he turned 20, heck prob before he turned 10 - or gone and got killed in some dictatorshippy country for speaking out against the authorities, i mean, it feels like his head would implode from all the "injustices" in the world first

but really, "oh mister serial killer, i hope you will be forgiven" - like come on mc... also, serial killer is around town... why would he suddenly appear and go for the kid, like usually it is not so easy to catch a serial killer, especially one who has eluded the authorities for long enough to kill ten people....

Alright, this is now dropped. It was horribly paced, the same with its story.
It's like as if it was a 14 year old kid making the story.

Also, how the fck did this went through the editorial department

"I eat people"

"I pray for you"

I see why he's an SSS rank soul now. He's naive. The angels just gave the most naive person alive the strongest power.

What the fuck is up with this manga.
The pacing is so terrible and tbh, these chapters are somewhat completely irrelevant. It's making the manga more boring.
