I'm reading Matsumoto's works chronologically and this is quite the interesting jump from Straight, his previous manga. Straight was a feel-good almost slice of life story, while this seems if anything too gritty, the way seinen can sometimes be. He changed his art style too, tho that's to be expected, I think he was about 20-22 when this was published, so still trying things out I guess.
