HOWEVER, what that is in Japanese is a "pronoun" selector.
First-person pronoun, specifically.

They are talking about when to switch from "boku" to "ore".

This is a thing, for many Japanese youths, but I've met adults who use "boku".
Actually, Eikichi Yazawa, the poster boy of「かっこいい」and 「ロックの神様」, uses it. Well, when he's not "on". When he's in pure Yazawa/Ei-chan mode, he uses "ore". Different attitudes. Stage persona, yknow? (He also doesn't use random English-esque gibberish when speaking normally. He will randomly scat during shows, usually during songs, like he's Michael Jackson or something, but I think he's been doing it longer. "Heybabyamashamelai! Imma-semaniiiight! C'mon gimme hammagon!")

Point is, it's more about personal vibe than age.
