If I had to guess... the "shell" (whether it be her closet or a literal shell) is supposed to protect her from what she's scared of, right? I'm guessing this sense of protection in the presence of danger is what she is looking for through her claustrophilia. So using the shell in safe space won't do much. It's gotta be a spot that feels dangerous. Simply being outside is probably perfect for her.
