the head is ambiguous and could simply be used as agitating that one knight but warming up with the girls can simply be explained as him wanting to learn how the elite of this world fights before he fights the captain nothing irrational about that

Exactly...these girls were the direct subordinates of the Knight captain...so he'd get an idea of how she'd fight through them as she most likely trained them or with them.
