If it's like tuning a guitar string, you could isolate four sections of a single string and assign them unique tensions. Then "pluck" at four unique spots.

I was literally thinking the exact same thing. Having recently watched a video on the history of Fourier transforms and how they work that kind of thinking was fresh in my mind and, like you mentioned, they are both based on sound/waves.
