I know this is played for laughs and I shouldn't be taking this seriously...
But this is the first time I'm against the childhood friend....
I wonder why.... I know this is pure humor and shouldn't be taken seriously....
Maybe it's because it's rarely used for humor and this trope is only ever used to show abusive relationships....
Like, if it was slapstick where he beat her, I'd laugh it off... but this... I can't....

She's extremely lucky she heard that. Imagine if she had started dating him, and then due to knowing him for so long, had got quickly married after high school. The dude would have, with 100% certainty, hurt the family finances by gambling and other reckless behavior. You can tell by how casually he lied to her about his grandpa being in a hospital and wanting to bring him fruits, yet he only wanted to hit the arcade. It's the kind of ruthless lie that reveals his true nature. After all, he knew the girl, a childhood friend, knows his tough family circumstances and would thus be sympathetic if he told something happened to his family members. On the other hand he apparently never pays back what he borrowed from her previously, which is another telltale sign of his true nature. I'm sure she has heard plenty of times all kinds of excuses and promises.

because it is simple just bad, and you should cut tie with whoever done that. not that complicated.
But Why where a slapstick where they beat each other you can laught it off ? well, couple or even the not-so-lover pair can have their lover quarrel IRL, which is can be harmless lot of the time, heck sometime it is even cute. fiction can be over the top for the slapstick and we can pick on it being slapstick. we feel like it is harmless and leave no impact.
This is however just bad, no mater how much you lower scale, change the tone. it still bad. leeching someone by their trust, sympathy and goodwill, and using your family's wellbeing as factor to lie for it.
We can laught at the story, but not mean we take the situation as cool. Laugh for a dark joke is one, do not mean we can't aware something and thing it is not that bad because "it is not mean to taken serious"

No, she wasn't gullible.... she actually knew he had family problems... he scammed her with facts.... it was just his own actions he lied about....
He literally used his grandpa being in the hospital to scam money from his childhood friend....
isn't that even worse if that's the case?

The only iffy reason for why I'm not fully sure about judging him is solely because the author is trying to play it off as comedy....
