I think we're correct in the basics, that there was a traffic accident where he put himself in harm's way to save her from a vehicle that was about to hit her. Nothing nefarious, just bad luck.

If anything, I think this interaction will either A: lead to the MC being more confident in his relationship after a confrontation with this idiot, or B: lead to the FMC being more protective of the MC after all this.
