I think we're still at the point where it's mostly the good ones that are being picked up for translation - 90+% of what's out there is crap, we're seeing samples of the <10% of non-crap which caught someone's attention enough to get them doing a translation.
Nah I don’t think so. I also read raw and they generally are good, you’re just putting your bias. I mean the harem bs is getting more scans than the good ones so I don’t get why it wouldn’t be the case here? It’s just that the overall quality is just way better

I also considered suggesting that someone writing GL in China may be pushing against some significant cultural headwinds, so it probably requires more passion for telling their stories, which tends to result in higher quality stories. Though I don't know how true that is, so I dropped it from the previous comment . . .

Tempting though the idea might be, it's not like yuri is the universal solution to crap storytelling - the general idea that 90% of everything is crap will still hold, it's more a question of when and where the crap filter applies: before people even start writing, when people are trying to publish things, when people are deciding whether to translate or not, and so on. If there's proportionately less crap around in the GL genre it just means the crap filter is getting in earlier than it does elsewhere.

How come GL manhua are so good
Won't quote all posts to not have a massive wall of text of quotes cause I already made a massive wall of text below :wtf:

So, why non Japanese GL tends to be so good, I agree that many being based on novels + mostly good ones being translated definitely help on that perception, after all we probably don't get even like 10% of all existing series translated :v

But I think it's mostly cue to how they're published, think about it, for better and worse mangas became extremely streamlined, you get like a magazine, be it shounen, shoujo, horror, yuri, anything, and you already have some idea of what to expect

Like, sure there's some variation obviously, but they do put things inside little boxes (magazines) to more easily sell, so they tend to follow a certain pattern on what kind of series are published

Another issue is that since they're being physically published for the most part then they play safe with  what is published, also at any time it can ge cancelled

the result? Vast majority of mangas industry as a whole is pretty stale and streamlined to released the same type of stories again and again, just look at GL, it's almost always basically schoolgirls or office ladies 90% of the time, with any outlier more often than not never selling well and getting canceled

Actually, only recently ish due to advent of digital release becoming more and more the norm that some publishers seem to be taking risk and giving more freedom to mangakas

Another thing, since mangas are first published in magazines then vast majority of yuri is laser focused on romance, just look at how vast majority of yuri that ain't like that are generally published in different magazines

And now we get to outside of Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, whatever you choose they don't publish physically, they seem to publish first and foremost digitally as long strip to read on phones, they don't depend on volume sales

There's also the fact that they're  webcomics too, their entire format as a whole is completely different from mangas, they're published in sites with all kind of stories instead of magazines of x genre

I think because of that the publishers simply don't keep looking over the shoulder of the writer / artist nor demands them to keep their story is the typical format like mangas magazine most likely do

Like, non Japanese GL can literally be all over the place with some downright weird stories because they have infinitely more freedom, that in itself already helps probably have a higher standard of quality compared to manga

I think another reason we have this perception is because let's be real, GL mangas are good and all that but after reading a few hundred you can safely guess what will happen for the most part, always following the same beats, art tend to not be too wildly different from one series to another either

So I think a lot of GL from other places can seen so good because they're simply something different lol, with the sheer variety of story and art literally being all over the place it's harder to find many GL that are meh compared to manga giving us the same stories again and again

Now that you're making me think about it, it's mainly about reading a new medium from a different culture, most GL manhua revolve around the same few themes: re-incarnation, schoolgirls, businesswomen. And yeah, looking back, it's not that different from japanese GL
Also, their publishing models are the consequences of the local culture, being physical or digital

It's true that there is a lot of reincarnation / transmigration, schoolgirls, businesswoman, but like, even their schoolgirls stories can be all over then place instead of generic fluffy we get in manga

Reincarnation / transmigation also has quite some variety in the fantasy setting and what the characters do

Not only businesswoman, models, actresses, policewoman, superhero

There's also all the weird settings involving magic in some way like My Food is Very Cute, Beware The Dog for example, Love Gives Me Superpowers

Like, you read a schoolgirls or office lady manga? You've borderline read it all

You read a schoolgirl manhwa / manhua / whatever? You don't know what to expect, does one of the girls have abusive parents? Are they voice actress? One of them is a vampire? They time travel? Aliens appear? Who knows, everything is on the table, literally can't be sure of what to expect

And that's just for schoolgirls stuff, what about that yuri where one of the pcs is basically a gangster for example, same author made one where mc learn martial arts or whatever

I don't know but for me they're very different from Japanese GL lol

And yeah I know publishing models is due to different local culture,, my point is that since outside of Japan it boil downs to digital webcomic that inevitably brings a lot more freedom compared to manga

While I agree there are a lot of variation, I also expect as much for a country as populated as China but my point is, from my readings, a good part are re-incarnations, the second is young career (women) adults and they often tell the "same" story;
For my japanese reading, I tend to avoid the generic schoolgirls so I don't actually read them as much, but there are also a lot of varieties, just a lesser amount of them published

Population doesn't matter if they don't get freedom to write whatever they want though, in Japan basically anything different gets canceled cause people there want the same stories again and again lol, examples, that sylph princess, the one about space fishing lesbians in a patriarchal society, that one of nun fighting vampires, I had another one but I forgot :v

Manhwa "same" is more basic similarities while manga "same" is retelling the same stories all the fucking time following the exact same beats with barely any changes

"there's also a lot of varieties" and "just lesser amount of them published" are kinda contradictory, fact that there's a lot less of these outlier GL published by definition means there is not a lot of variety since vast majority in the end is still schoolgirls and office ladies

Yeah sorry but we'll have to agree to disagree lol, I read pretty much all GL I see and I honestly disagree with the idea that manhwa and so on keep telling the same story like manga does, the variety is infinitely higher both in story and characters lol

What I mean by same is, whether it is manga or manhua, more often than not they are both predictable in the story, characters or endings
