1- The human protag is ambiguously tomboyish looking, and no confirmation of their gender is given yet.

2-Earth is not a human, so even if it looks male, the concept of genders may not apply to it anyway.

Man. Of all the possible words for gay/queer/whatever you had to choose "homo", which literally means "same" (as in, of course, homosexual; 'loves the same sex').
