It might feel a bit late in the story but it works perfectly well as a narrative vehicle to showcase Chi Tang's character growth from her juvenile days, as well as her clear taking of sides against the representation of her "old life" as it tries to put a wedge between her and her "current life". We see that she's still resistant to thinking about the future and as someone who represents her days of irresponsibly living in the present, it was important for her to receive this push from him to highlight that while she isn't quite where You Yu wants her to be, she's moving towards that and away from how she once was.

I think the biggest mistake people are making is reading his character as a "jealousy test" - you don't have to like his introduction but it feels like the complaints are missing the point entirely to begin with by seeing it that way

I never read him as a jealousy test and the story makes it very clear he is not. I read him as unrealistic and near cartoon-level villainy. His sudden introduction coupled with his actions is clunky at best to me. There are far better ways to get the point across.

He is a vehicle and not an actual person--serves a singular purpose and then is gone. It's very mechanical and its introduction this late in the story makes it feel even more so. The story starts dipping its toes in this mechanical storytelling towards the end. But I still enjoy it overall.

I find it hilarious that they're supposed to have 6 roommates total but I guess the writer kept forgetting about the 6th member and just gave up. She's mentioned on rare occasion but I think she only appeared once when they were first introduced (I don't even remember what she looked like)
