I think the archduke is stuck in a shame spiral. He's lost so many men and had to bend his pride to get helpful those he despises. Now, they've just sent him a handful of newbies and a naive 15 year old princess. Everything seems lost and hopeless at this point, such that the onky thing he has left is his pride. Also, he's giving jealous ex-boyfriend vibes. He was probably in love with the late queen and blames her Mayan husband for her death.
