It's kind of coincidental that you can convert modern Japanese to Okinawan; Japanese is just very conservative among Japonic languages.

Also, yeah, it's difficult to figure out where one language ends and another begins in the Ryuukyuus. Usually in scholarship I see particular varieties referred to by where they're from, so eg 'Hateruma Yaeyama' (the language variety from Hateruma in the Yaeyama archipelago) or 'Yuwan Amami' (the language variety from Yuwan in the Amami archipelago).

Was page 7 a reference to this guy?

When they put it like that, Uchinnaguchi seems more like pig latin mixed with sha256 (edit: meant that in a good way! >.<'). Yeah, it's easy to go one way, but I'm so used to kanto-/tokyo-ben japanese that it's hard to go the other way >XD

Holy... strong dialect differences even between neighboring villages, on a relatively small island? That's pretty extreme.

Reads bangumi, first thing that comes to mind:
"kono bangumi wa goran no suponsaa no teikyou de okurishimasu!"
:pepehmm:

It's not really that extreme. With enough time and isolation, you can end up with vastly different dialects in pretty much any language, and considering Japan's geography, being isolated isn't exactly difficult.

They're writing it's literally the neighboring village, not three islands over. So yes that is quite extreme.

Sorry, I may have misinterpreted your comment. You are correct, neighboring villages having differing accents/dialects is pretty extreme. I was more refering to the concept of accents having extreme differences, even amongst nearby villages, being a common occurence. Again, sorry for any misunderstandings.
