Seems like kind of a weird thing to say, when this chapter starts out with a flashback of Van going "if I ever see you again, I'm gonna kill you on the spot" to him.

Also, that color splash makes me miss Basdia. Best girl.

I think the implication in that was "I'm waging war with your employer, so killing his men is the tactically sound decision. If you want to live, remove any shadow of a doubt that you might be one of his men." A "get the hell outta Dodge by nightfall" kind of threat.

Man complied as much as he could. Packed up shop and skipped town.

So the context in their second meeting was wildly different. He didn't show up working for Van's enemies, but being held captive by them. Man's still a weirdo but not a potential threat in any way.
