also that he shouldn't bother about what everyone thinks about him and move on solely focused on his goals of bettering himselfWhat an annoying chapter. For the length of the whole chapter I was just waiting for Leold to tell Erina to keep her forked tongue behind her teeth. But of course the previous chapter, where Leold was unable to lift a finger to defend the saintess, already revealed he's lacking the kind of spirit you need to confront hostile people. He's feeling far too deeply Leold's past sins. They aren't his. He should just look at them purely objectively, with zero conscience since they weren't his misdeeds. Yet this scene looked 100% like Sendou Makoto himself would have been responsible. I have said before that he can't escape the consequences since he just happens to have Leold's body and identity now, but he doesn't need to get emotional about it, no more than a man falsely accused and sent to a prison would feel responsible for the crime someone else did.

The entire chapter I was thinking this same thing.
"Why do you care so much about what someone else did and why are YOU personally being hurt by stuff you had nothing to do with?"
The MC is so spineless I could confuse him for a jellyfish.
It's not empathy that's the problem, you are over simplifying it.The MC is living in the shadow of the life he he was dumped into. He's trying to better himself, without knowing how terrible that former life was. He's not so inhumane as to not feel bad for others situations. He's not spineless. He's merely showing empathy.
Again, the problem isn't empathy or a lack thereof. You can be empathetic without being crushed by the actions of someone else. It might be the body he inhabits but he acts like he's the one who personally did everything and that's the problem. If you suddenly woke up in the body of someone else, someone bad, you'd feel sorry and empathize with the victims, but you'd never act like you yourself were the problem. You'd think "How am I going to fix 'this guy's' mistakes and actions? How can I right his wrongs?"The reason he apologizes is because he is truly sorry for what had happened to them.
He knows the universe will always see him as the golden pig, so all he can do is show them he is more humble now and that He's not some cold hearted selfish sickofant, who only thinks about himself and how good his life is.
He's trying to better the world around him, not just make things better for himself.
What happened in the web novel? The manga seems to be over at 25 chapters. Doesn't seem like it followed the web novel, and for good reason, it's awful.
The problem is:Erina was the worst girl in the WN and she takes the title in the manga too.
That being said I hope they do the discussion he has with his former fiancée justice. It truly opened Leold's eyes and the cascading effects of his attempting to redeem himself.
She details how her, her family and the people who sided with them to break the engagement have been getting eviscerated socially and personally because they broke off the engagement to Leold who is returning to the way he was before he became known as the Golden Pig where everyone was expecting him to lead the young generation in the future. She proceeds to tell him she will NEVER forgive him for what he did to her, and asks why he decided to redeem himself NOW instead of before because it's almost as if he's doing this to attack her again. Leold reassures her his intention to reform is genuine and she says she'll hold him to that if only so no one else has to go through what she did at his hands again. Leold also also realizes he isn't living in a bubble in Zeat(even if he was essentially exiled there) and contrary to his will or intentions the Nobility and Royalty will manipulate his actions because he's proving to be talented to throw away over what he did in the past victims be damned.
