First, unrelated to manga. The anime is okay, but after reading the manga i can't help but have a slightly higher expectation and sadly it didn't deliver on the ep3, ep1 was quite decent and enjoyable.

Now into the manga, holy shit. What a cool fight from old man Beryl fighting against the vice principal, probably the 2nd strongest magician so far. The realization and "enlightment" after being told that his sword can cut magic is super chill, he immediately change how he is fighting against a mage after one of the disadvantage fighting against mage is gone.

The vice principal had a sad past with his student that want to combine sword and magic but unfortunately something happened to him making the vice Principal really against with sword, thankfully with Ficelle comes to the mage squad and having old man Beryl won the fight now the vice Principal want to learn sword too which is kinda funny but really awesome.

And the last panel, that shadow definitely the sword saint as the mentioned on first panel. Shit is going to be fire next chapter, Old man Beryl vs the Shadow of Sword Saint.

Correction, Vice-Principal. Principal is Lucy, and I highly doubt such an old man is weaker than Fissel.

The anime isn't as good... I still couldn't fathom the reason they decided to adapt the light novels, when the series' appeal and sales mostly come from the manga. Atleast from what I could recall.

In any case, good ass chapter. Beryl's awakening his battle-drunkeness very clearly now. It wasn't this prominent before when he fought against the loli mage back in early chapters.

This manga is a jewel.

The story is very simple, the characters are fun, cute, and charming, and the art by itself is good, nothing groundbreaking, but the artist IS very good... the way the fights are done.

Since I started reading this manga, I still can't believe how INCREDIBLE the storyboarding of the fights is, it is... cinematic, there is no better way to describe it.

I have nothing against when images are "still panels", but the greatest artists are those who can draw motion in a way that is vivid... Satou-sensei goes a step further, he composes the scenes like they are part of a movie. There is a dynamism here that I very rarely see.

Which brings me... to the anime... truth be told, I knew the anime wouldn't have the same feel as the manga, which is... kinda ironic.

When they chose the artist to draw this one, they struck a DIAMOND mine, i dont think i would like this story as much as i do if Satou-sensei didnt had such a incredible hand for composing the fights, and by some things i read he may have made a few changes in the flow of the story too, or maybe the Sagasaki-sensei did those to vary the versions a little.

With each new fight this gets better and better as new strong fighters enter the story, with diverse style of fighting, and the fact that you can see that they fight diferently of each other is amazing, like someone pointed out... the fights play like a dialogue, you can see the words not written in every motion of each character.

Seeing the way the old man uses his magic is a joy.

One of the best aspects of this story is that none of the supporting characters' motivation is fueled by petty reasons like jealousy or misplaced superiority. All of them have their justified reasons as to why they act the way they do, not just to create unnecessary drama and friction for the story

Dang... Beryl too good! Throwing sheath to blind him, then tossing the sword in the air... its reminds me of the first episode of Demon Slayer, where Tanjirou does a similar thing(but to less effect). What a great fight; this manga's battles are always a joy to watch/read because of the skill used throughout the fight, instead of just raw strength/speed.

Agreed. They changed the setup and events of the Lucy fight, even if the end result is the same, it came off as less impressive. They also made Beryl more relaxed because they took the serious element out of it by not making him think something happened to Fissel. I assumed that they were just saving the budget for the later fights with the 3v1 Beryl fight against Euro/Gollen/Robberie and later Schupple, since the fight didn't even look as good as the Heimbritz one.

So the weak-sauce meeting between Beryl and Lucy shown in the anime was from the LN? I think the manga did that a lot better.

I've heard that manga changed how some things happened in the ln so it might be that the manga is the one that's changed
