Close, but no, This is menhera. it's like yandere but a lot more unstable, needy, and self harming, and a lot less kidnapping, stabbing, and drugging.

I don’t think she’s at the menhera stage yet - she’s not barricading him in her room, or going through his phone demanding that he purge the female contacts out or anything like that. Menhera requires a certain level of selfishness, and I don’t see that thus far.

That being said I have no idea if the Japanese pre-serialization has stronger stuff or not…

1. I'm pretty sure he doesn't even have any other female friends (and being his best friend for years I'm sure she knows that already) so going through his phone wouldn't make sense.

2. I've never seen a menhera barricade anyone in a room before, and I've read like 5 mangas that had a menhera in them before, some with the main character as one. From what I've seen they mainly just cling to people/ beg them to never leave them/ threaten self harm if they do. But she's super afraid of being hated, so she doesn't act quite like that. But she still clings to him and doesn't want to be apart so...

Also I don't really see any yandere behavior. No knife, no rope, no drugs, no stalking, no excessive photos or digging through the trash, and overall just zero yandere qualities, besides the obsession. Which is a trait that yanderes and menheras share.

the author made another ver of this but idk if its canon or not, but at chapter ten Mikoto tells her mom she wants to do a lunchbox herself (for the male protag) and the mom says "its okay mikoto u dont have to suffer more than this, mom will handle everything for you"(probably implying how much she made her daughter suffer due to her mother failures) then she follows up with a rant about how much she is a failure as a mom and not to give up on her, this probably means why she is acting like this came from her blood, passed down from her mother, and maybe her grandma

I don't think it's about "buying" the relationship, the MC is in a way a link to her past childhood, a sort of "normalcy", and she is afraid of losing it

The link to her past childhood was also my first thought (and it is most likely true), but because we don't know how she reacts and talks to other people, I didn't discard the other possibility. The title in english also being "Mikoto-chan Doesn't Want to Be Hated!", though we don't know if this refers to people around her or just the MC.
We simply need to wait and see. Judging from the cover of Vol. 3 we don't need to wait too long.
