The town having a weak military force unable to even beat goblins is very, very stupid, BUT, the information of the country being at war makes it a bit more reasonable.
Strong soldiers, mercenaries and adventurers that want to make a name for themselves likely gone to the warfront Or decided to leave the country to avoid being conspricted into killing people, who was left was low level soldiers with little battle experience, dungeons didn't had people going in to "clean", so they started to overflow.

From the Demigod's explanation, when the three died he split himself in half, to use half his power in the blessing of the MC, the girl and thief had to split the other half. So, it makes sense that they didn't get the explanation the MC got, and would be really emotional to know they aren't alone.
