I feel like everyone is kind of ignoring the massive issue of Meris carrying around an insta-death item, carelessly leaving the on the floor, and doing nothing to save the very life of the person she's supposedly interested in other than saying "hey wait"?
Like I understand the plot purpose here of revealing Eugene is of course super OP in every way (because why not make him even less relatable), but it makes Meris look extremely incompetent and dangerous. If he didn't happen to be secretly super talented in magic, he would now be dead. And his master, who vowed to protect him, would have failed...because of her friend doing something that dumb.
That's just really bad writing.
