The WN just described the cause in a few lines at one point, doesn't even mentioned the family name of the fiancee, and then never mentioned it again in the future chapters.

The author kinda pushes her (not the ex-fiancee) into the spotlight for quite a few times already (even with drip marketing in the cover), and with tone filled with goodwill. It might seems a bit cliche, but it won't be surprising if it happened.

The first one is Lily, Maizell's lil sis, that has been revealed a few chapters ago.

They think MC is hostile to the whole family but is not really that.
MC is only really hostile to the sister, and for how their family treated MC house with contempt he simply doesn't want to do anything to do with them, but as territory neighbors he have to.
He doesn't hate this girl at all, is just that after the nightmare were he super imposed her face on the bad sister he feels uncomfortable around her, and guilty as she is not that person and is more friendly than the others.

For the villagers, is clear they are hiding something, even without the insanely sus behaviour, they want to be paid in gold coins that should be hard to use instead of lower grade ones or bartering, that means they have someone they can trade said coins with ease, and when asked about the river they offered to send their own people instead of making the soldiers do it, so is likely they don't want the soldiers to go in that direction, the river maybe isn't even that far.
They are hiding something, possibly what MC talked about in a previous chapter about dungeon equipment being hidden from the government of the country, and that they are selling it.

Had to bash my head trying to understand that sentence... and even now, I don't think I did.

I will hate this author so much if he creates all this drama around Hermine just to scrap her latter for the artist girl. There is only a few more tasteless things in a comic for me then to build a great and unique lover candidate and to just suddenly scrap them later for someone generic that showed up out of nowhere. Borderline NTR.
Considering that the Hermine story deviates from the source material for now, I will leave a shred of hope.
