"Flawed" is an understatement for Yami. Her character is all flaws, she's about as shallow as a character that's all virtues.
That's a really interesting point, iirc the only redeeming thing about Yami is that in her inner monologues she admits fault be she never once acted on it, so that amounts to nothing.

Honestly, I'm not sure why people are so mad at Yuu. I keep seeing people say that he lied, and I'm having trouble figuring out where the lie is. I honestly feel like some people are projecting personal shit on him.

I can understand why Hikari would lash out since she's confused and isn't completely aware of what's going on, but I feel like this is going to result in her regretting that. She very clearly wants a perfect fairy tale confession and love life that just isn't based in reality, and it's going to hurt her. Personally, I would've just asked directly and made Yuu answer for it himself.

Yami on the other absolutely shit thing to do, we saw him try to reach out to her and she hard ghosted him, unless he wanted him to turn into a stalker idk what more he could have done. I get she's also letting everything out, but it's completely unjustified in her case.
From my experience reading comments in all sorts of mangas here, some people barely read the bubbles, others can't remember what happened one chapter ago. So I guess that's where the Yuu hate is coming from.
When he confessed to Hikari he said " I have loved you all this time " and for Hikari that's an obvious lie because he was kissing Yami a minute or two before.
He also told Hikari his phone battery had died and he got lost inside the school, and from Hikari's POV thats also a lie because again, she saw him kissing Yami.

The ending I'm seeing is Yuu getting back with Yami, partly because he's worried to leave her alone and partly because he will think that the only love he could ever get is from Yami, now that Hikari rejected him. He then lives short and miserable life with Yami, getting killed in marital dispute over nothing.

Yo, can someone tell me what timeline we are in?
Like seriously is this a flashback or are we in the present?
Has Hikari witnessed them kissing twice?
If so, that's hilarious.

These male characters really do suck when you look at them from the outside, huh.

This chapter just confirms he does know tho, like yeah Yuu just found out that both Yami and Hikari were friends but when he does confess to Hikari he does know that fact.

Like Yuu hiding his past relationship with Yami from Hikari is understandable, but the moment he found out they were friend he should be upfront about it if Yuu want to confess to Hikari.

imo Yuu not telling Hikari about any of the details before the confessions is because he fears that it would lower his chance and i totally get why he does that, but it doesnt mean what he does was right. Hikari rejecting his confession because she saw what happen is even more of a reason why he should just be upfront about it.

And i am saying this as someone who still want to see Yuu and Hikari ending up together, but i hope these next few chapters will be Yuu telling Hikari the truth about everything because its the only way for them to be together.
Well although I don't want them to be together, I totally agree with everything else you said.

its comments like this that make me laugh. How are you gonna blame the person who got ghosted through text in this situation? The hilarious thing is that even Yami knows it was nonsense coming out of her mouth and here you are agreeing with the nonsense lol.
He had no idea how absolutely broken the girl was because they were two consenting parties that used eachother to get over their personal problems, and Yami kept him in the dark about alot of her family problems.
If we go by your logic, Yuu should never talk to any woman every outside of Hikari EVEN though Hikari at the time did not have any romantic interest in him until a year later.
I agreed with what nonsense? I said she's the one that messed it up. But he didn't even try after that.

My point was that if they had truly fallen in love with each other, he knows places to find her. Especially her home she took him too.

The guy didn't even try to find her. Even after he said he loved her. Couldn't even be bothered to write a letter and leave it at her one home.

Yami of course started it and is at fault but the guy didn't even try.

Im just really confused on how you can read what I wrote and come to that conclusion. Thats insane.

And yes if your truly in love with someone and are trying to pursue them, you don't stick your dick in some random girl you met. Doesn't mean he can't talk to other girls, but you don't fuck them.

Been saying this ever since but these Hikari simps were so bent on hating everyone not named Hikari. Especially Yuu when he did nothing wrong. For this reason I hope Hikari gets cucked again. She is so trash.
Hikari getting cucked is fun precisely because she doesn't deserve any of this trash.

I, too, sympathize with Yuu but I don't agree with the whole "Yuu did nothing wrong."

He absolutely did something wrong in that during this chapter he found out Yami and Hikari were friends. He decided to confess to Hikari without mentioning the fact that he used to date one of her friends. I know there are people out there who believe you don't need to mention everyone you've dated to a prospective new partner but you need to if it's their close friend.

What did Yuu think would happen? He'd start dating Hikari and hanging out with her friends and it would never come up? That Yami would just take it to the grave? Considering how crazy she acted in the classroom, Yuu should be trying to get ahead of the story and tell Hikari first before Yami gives whatever weird version is in her head.

Yeah and him thinking of stuff that could impact whether his confession being accepted or not is along those lines no? Cause ultimately if he got rejected then it could ruin their friendship.
They might sound very similar, but the important part here is that he is waiting for the right moment, meanwhile getting closer and closer to Hikari and feeling the right chemistry. The "maximizing chances" thing would be more about "what should I say and what should I hide for my confession to be succesful". The first one is natural, it's about getting to the point in their relationship where he is confident their feelings are mutual, while the other is kinda orchestrated. Hope I was able to get my point across.

then it would make the confession/feelings from Yuu feels pretty shallow imo, i just would want to see some conviction from him regarding this
I mean, confessing right after a heated encounter with your ex whose existence you are hiding from the girl you are supposed to like feels shallow no matter how you go about it.

Yeah him wanting to say something but getting cut off is the one mystery left but maybe its just him trying to apologize or explaining why he didnt.
Feels like he was trying to be really passionate about it. So I don't think he was apologizing. Explaining or retorting are a maybe, but I'm more inclined to think he was trying to confess his feelings for someone.

Yeah i dont agree with this.

I dont think Yuu count this as another heartbreak because he has moved on and realise Hikari is the one he wanted to be with it. I mean yes he did cry at the end but imo it doesnt mean he was heartbroken here.

I also think what happens is just that Yuu finally decide to confess to Hikari because he finally has some closure to his first ever real relationship imo.
I agree with your statement has in the only "yuu pov text" he mentioned that 3 of them were HIKARI related. Meaning he either only counted the foretold ghosting or his whole year without Yami as the heartbreak

Alright, had to dive back into this because the Yuu hate felt... seriously off. And yeah, after a re-read, my gut was absolutely right. It's not just that protagonists confessing after drama is common (generally someone confess to the protagonist and the love interest see and we get drama, here was the other way around); it's that the narrative heavily leans on the girls' perspectives, leaving Yuu's internal struggles mostly in the shadows until the very end.

People forget, or maybe as the story doesn't scream it enough from his PoV, but Yuu was crushing on Hikari for AGES. We see this clearly when he tells Yami about Hikari (Chapter 23: "There's someone there I want to catch up to, to stand beside"). His attempt to get into her high school, despite the odds (revealed in Chapters 16 & 17), wasn't a whim; it was a testament to his long-standing, one-sided love. Hikari herself admits internally she would have rejected him flat out if he'd confessed back then (Chapter 17: "The 'manly' me back then, according to her. The me who had never even considered romance. I might not have nodded yes to his confession."). She literally only saw him as a childhood friend, almost a younger brother figure, for the longest time.

Then Yami enters the picture. And let's be brutally honest, based on Yami's own recollections (Chapters 22-30, especially 29 & 30), she was the one who initiated and escalated their physical relationship, used him to cope with her own immense trauma, and then abruptly cut him off without a real explanation, leaving him in the dark. For her to then reappear and, in Chapter 40, unleash that tirade blaming him for not magically finding her or "chasing her enough" despite her being the one to ghost him? That's an incredibly unfair burden to place on anyone, let alone a teenage boy who was clearly just as invested. Of course, he'd be emotionally guarded after an experience like that. It's no wonder he tells Seki (Chapter 12) that his feelings for "someone" (Hikari) existed before he even met Seki, showing his emotional landscape was already complicated.

So, when Hikari finally catches feelings (like the title clearly spells out), Yuu is initially... cautious. That's not him being "indecisive"; that's a kid who's been burned, trying to protect himself. Remember Chapter 1? Hikari leans on his back, and there's no emotional flicker from him mentioned. Fast forward to Chapter 18, same scenario, and he's blushing intensely. That's him responding to Hikari (finally) showing some (albeit incredibly confusing and often demanding) interest. He isn't just "going with any person"; he showed zero romantic interest in Seki or Matsuyama (Chapter 16). His focus has always been narrow.

And let's talk about Hikari's "interest." She herself knows she's a handful (Chapter 19 is a prime example: "Even I can't defend myself today."). The whole festival invitation drama, where she spiraled because he hesitated for a moment? He didn't even say no! He ended up practically begging to go because she made him feel like he'd ruined everything. She repeatedly puts him in situations where he can't win, expecting him to read her mind. How many of us would keep pursuing someone who consistently pushes away or sends such mixed signals? Both Yami and Hikari did this to him in their own ways.

He does try to be open when he feels it's safe. He confessed his feelings of inadequacy to Hikari during their date (Chapter 17), how he always felt he was chasing her shadow, and she interpreted it as him seeing her as a "rival." Then, when he finally gathers the courage to confess his love directly at the festival (Chapters 37-38), a moment that should have been a triumph for both of them, Hikari rejects him (Chapter 38: "But! But! I hate liars!") because of the Yami situation that he was just as blindsided by.

So, why is Yuu getting all this flak? We're seeing the world almost exclusively through the girls' emotionally charged and often unreliable narration. This guy:

  1. Loved Hikari from afar for years, got no reciprocation.
  2. Got into an intense relationship with Yami, was deeply invested, then got abruptly abandoned and later blamed for her pain.
  3. When Hikari finally shows interest, he cautiously opens up again, only to be emotionally manipulated by her mood swings.
  4. Gets physically and verbally assaulted by Yami in front of Hikari (Chapter 40).
  5. Confesses his long-held love to Hikari, only to be rejected again.
He's not "indecisive"; he's reacting to the emotional chaos these two create around him. He’s the one consistently putting his heart on the line when he feels there's even a sliver of a chance, only to have it crushed. The poor dude just got slapped and thrown to the ground (literally and figuratively) and rejected by the two people he genuinely cared about. Yeah, that's definitely not going to affect him at all, right? The distress is pretty evenly distributed, if not more so on Yuu's side for being the emotional punching bag. Seriously, cut the guy some slack. What would you guys do in his shoes?
I feel someone finally read between the lines. Yuu isn't to blame. He is the same as HIKARI and YAMI. Victim to their environment and reacting to each other as best they can

Ok but what is there to hate about Hikari? Her character development has been immaculate this arc. She also is a relatable human being with actual human emotions/emotional range (when compared to her earlier)

Yami is a selfish bipolar (not an excuse tho) psycho schemer and Yuu a deceiving weak pushover loser (I defended him until these chapters)
She is a self centered women who totally ignored the damaged she caused to Yuu. Her actions towards Yuu in middle school are what ended up getting Yuu and Yami to meet. And then she fell in love with the damaged Yuu left by his break up with Yami. Basically as the title say. She fell in love too late. She realized too late. Not because it wasn't obvious. But because at that time it didn't matter to her own life.
