Kudou's plans seem to be working almost too well, however she may have stepped on Mine's toes this chapter by interfering with Isanuma. If it was Mine's plan to socially isolate Isanuma so that she has no one left but her, then Kudou is now clearly in her way.

Also, Kudou turning Isanuma against Naoi instead of Kurumi could also blow up in Kudou's face given how impulsive Isanuma can be when she's angry.

Naoi's mom contacting her after all this time seems to be done with an ulterior motive of trying to get rid of her guilt over abandoning Naoi in the first place. Waiting until Naoi only has about a year and a half of high school left, then she'd likely be moving out anyway. Plus, how much time would Naoi's mom even have for her when she's presumably about to have a baby? Interesting that Naoi's name and her sister's name finally got revealed this chapter. I wasn't expecting it to be Manaka though. Her name has the kanji for love in it. Naoi's dad was set off by Naoi's mom dropping off divorce papers, which Naoi pointed out her mom knew would set him off, so it just shows that Naoi's mom isn't really considering Naoi's well-being in this. And Naoi kept the pregnancy from her dad as either a kindness or to keep him from completely melting down. Things between Naoi and her dad could very well continue to worsen though.

After Naoi's blowup last chapter it seems Kurumi's plan is to wait until Naoi's ready to talk to her. However, Naoi's mental state seems to be worsening and Kudou roping Kurumi back into the class has her just as busy as in volume 1. So when left alone Naoi's abandonment issues and stress flare up and cause her thoughts to become highly negative, which in turn causes Naoi to want to vent some of the stress by beating up Kudou again. We'll see where this goes, though given that Kudou likely made a misstep at the start of this chapter it might stop being smooth sailing for her soon.

Naoi's so afraid of being vulnerable she won't even allow herself to vent to her partner.

The "if you loved her, then why did you beat her" statement I feel is also a bit reflexive to Naoi as much as her father. As Naoi would also hit and kick Yoshizawa in the beginning. And although she doesn't really do it now, it's possible that Naoi thinks she resents her somewhere and will leave her too. Perpetuating the cycle of isolation and pain.

Post script: "I don't hate you. I don't hate you at all." We LOVE the toxic yuri in this household.

Are we going into a "Kurumi helps Naoi" arc now that Kurumi's situation is mostly settled? Right now they're both passively waiting for the other, but Kudou isn't. The situation is going to get worse if they do nothing.

It does seem like how affection is expressed and the use of violence is at the heart of this. Kurumi has more or less acknowledged to herself that she enjoys the pain, but she never said that to Naoi, who was feeling like she had to act artificially sweet. Naoi was celebrating Kurumi's isolation because she doesn't feel like someone with options would pick her, only for Kurumi to forgive Kokoro and continue with her class president duties rather than becoming the isolated truant Naoi was going for. Kurumi has left the status of their relationship vague, leaving Naoi to feel more insecure on top of this.

As readers, we've got a sense that Naoi is not that bad. She respects Kurumi's choices and doesn't try to put her in bad situations. She tried to break Kurumi off from Kokoro, Kurumi's only friend, but only because Kokoro was being a garbage friend. She doesn't argue with Kurumi when Kurumi wants to give Kokoro another chance despite everything. She is not only way above Kudou and the like, but would be a desirable partner in general. The question is how can she recognize this and reconcile it with her faults and background, rather than feeling like she's doomed to turn into father if she goes on long enough.

Kurumi's mom remains an outstanding X-factor lol. She has to come home at SOME point I assume. Maybe she comes home while Naoi is over and reacts poorly or something but who knows. And on the other side of things, Naoi's dad being who-knows-where is pretty terrifying. He knows where Naoi works, probably where her school is, knows what Kurumi looks like, and he might try to track down the mom now that he's been officially served with divorce papers.

Mine also remains pretty mysterious, but clearly possessive of Isanuma. Seems like they're heading towards a second school shit-show lmao. Kokoro also knows what Kudou is really like, so maybe she could preemptively get Azuma and Akane up to speed, which could keep Kudou from getting the whole class on her side. Could go a lot of different ways lol

Naoi definitely feels guilty about hurting Kurumi in the past (she looked horrified at what she'd done last chapter pushing Kurumi against the fence for example), and this chapter she didn't mean to hurt Kurumi when she grabbed her wrist, but she does and has a poor reaction to that as well. She compares herself to her father quite a bit which is really unfortunate, perpetuating the abuse cycle as others have pointed out. Even waaaay back in ch.13 she asks Kurumi if she thinks she resembles her dad

The longer she goes without telling Kurumi about Kudou the worse the misunderstanding will get, naturally, and either way Kurumi won't be happy if she thinks Naoi is seeing Kudou behind her back, or if she finds out Naoi beating Kudou up as a coping mechanism, which is probably what Naoi is planning to do to Kudou next time, though we don't know 100% for sure yet that that's her plan. Seems pretty likely though!

My reading comprehension might be dead because I thought she called the new baby Manaka. Nice kanji though (愛叶).

I thought that could be the case at first but it doesn't look like Naoi's mom is very far along, so it'd be a bit odd to have a girl's name picked out already, and to then tell Naoi what it is. I think she was pausing and then began to address Naoi as Manaka (which makes sense since it's her mom) but Naoi didn't want to listen to anything else she had to say at that point and cut her off

We can however be 100% sure Kudou's plan involves Naoi beating her up in some form. It's Kudou we're talking about here.

This series doesn't like to drag the relationship drama out too much, so I don't think they will go very far with this, but it could be a good impetus for Kurumi to feel uncomfortable with Naoi hurting someone who isn't her, then voice that in a way the assuages Naoi's insecurities. Kurumi can also point out how Kudou is manipulating and isolating Naoi since she is savvy to fakeness and mostly only has very little information at this point.

We actually kind of got that arc in Vol. 3, which focused mostly on Kurumi calling out Naoi's hypocritical behavior and refusing to let her push her away, but I think you're probably right that's where it's headed. Kurumi's been pretty aggro towards Kudou (rightfully so after she refused to help Naoi when Kokoro was choking her lmao), so a potential avenue could be her confronting Kudou directly about Naoi's sudden shift in mood.

Honestly Kurumi and Kudou have a really fun dynamic (not romantic, but the passive aggresive antagonistic banter lol) so I'd love to see them duke it out

I'm going to laugh if all of her reflections cause Naoi to apologize to Kudou instead. Now that would cause Kudou to go into meltdown mode.

This is largely why this series is so good for me. Each chapter raises a lot of questions, but I feel confident that the author will have satisfying answers and that we'll get them relatively quickly. The pacing in general is great. Compared to other series that like to dangle mysteries and elongate drama plots that end up being super unsatisfying, this one is like a breath of fresh air.

I wonder what their class will do for the culture festival. The three options shown this chapter were: Maid Cafe, Haunted House, and Castella Cake Shop .
