@tottori

Huh, this manga was canceled? When was that announced? The latest chapter?

I was actually just finishing writing this up in the series thread, but might as well move it over here:

Welp, RtE technically managed to make it more than two volumes without being axed, but it didn't make it three -- this ended up being one of those series that got the old mid-volume chop.

Kinda on the fence as to whether I'll do the last three chapters; (gestures broadly in the general direction of mangadex) THIS whole thing aside, the last three chapters weren't really anything amazing:

ch 14 - bottle episode featuring Fujiyoshi and her friends where Tadano only shows up at the very end and the thot isn't in it at all
ch 15 - thot wreaks havoc at one of Tadano's practice exams, basically the first part of ch 11 for an entire chapter
ch 16 - axe time! It ends pretty much how you'd think it ends, for better and worse:

It's exam day, Tadano forgot his exam ID ticket, thot saves the day by bringing it to him. On results day, he passes of course, but he's so relieved he botches his confession by admitting out loud he was going to confess to Fujiyoshi after passing (instead of, you know, actually confessing) while Fujiyoshi is standing right there. Fujiyoshi's Fujiyoshi so she likes Tadano doing it that way anyway. The thot is watching this from a rooftop through her finger-binoculars, comments on what a lovestruck couple they are, then looks up to the sky... When Tadano gets back to his apartment, there's no sign the thot was ever there of course, and his narration comments he's never seen her since. Last bit is "a few years later", where Tadano (who finally got a haircut) and Fuijyoshi are spooning naked in bed together when he wakes up. They're now seemingly living together, and Tadano hasn't flunked out according to his phone, good for him. Grabbing something from the fridge, he sees a can of good ol' Mighty Zero there (it's ambiguous as to if it was in there the previous day from the way he looks at it) and thinks... "what WAS her whole deal, anyway?" Meanwhile, somewhere in Japan, the thot is doing the same thing from back in chapter 1, page 1. Please look forward to Jorori-sensei's next work!

Damn, thanks for the response. I'm going to miss the horny neighbor office lady and especially Jorori's CRACKED art.

The ending is whatever. Hopefully when Jorori comes back they're on a more cohesive schedule and have a better story to boot.

In retrospect, the schedule went to basically quarterly after the Volume 1 sales came in (it's hard to say definitively since DYC is a digital only pub and the sales rankings are still only for physical books, but all available evidence points to that it had really bad sales numbers). So I think it's pretty clear that Jorori made the decision he wasn't going to kill himself getting a chapter out every month if he wasn't going to make any money on the backend.

It's harder for me to say why it persisted like this for as long as it did, and why the plug was pulled now; DYC being digital means they don't really have to axe for page space considerations as much, so that's a factor. And while RtE was the result of Jorori winning a serialization contest (and was hyped up in the early-chapter DYC issues as such), it wouldn't have cost them much to see how the second volume played out with Jorori working at essentially 33% regular per-page pay, and they probably didn't want their big contest winner ending up with a one-and-done series anyway. Those sorts of contest winner arrangements don't involve things like a 3-volume guarantee as part of it (I mean, it's not that they couldn't, but that's not common in the manga biz as far as I've ever heard of).

Whatever the actual specifics of the situation were, I think it's safe to say Volume 2 didn't sell any better and everybody was ready to move on to different projects by now. And here we are.

@tottori Just want to say thank you the insight & context on what is going with the manga. I was wondering what happened to this manga. Shame that it ended like it did but it was a wild ride that I don't regret reading. Even if you don't translate the remaining chapters, you still deserve the praise for at least giving it an English translation since I doubt this will get an official release. Appreciate all you & look forward to your next project if you decide to do another one (won't fault you for stopping given the whole DMCA situation with Mangadex).

Don't force yourself of you don't want to, but can you please translate those last 3 pitiful chapter ? (always sad when the translation is left unfinished, even the bad ones)
