I'm impressed Claude only chopped Cross' hand off at the start.
In the novel, the priestess once came back to Claude's throne room covered in blood and carrying the severed head of some dumb sumbitch who pretended to be Cross. Girl was quivering with rage.
And Claude was basically saying to Cross:
"If reincarnation was real, I would have killed myself a long time ago."
To be fair, it is implied that the hero's party did try to revive/resurrect him and failed. Thus he would be very hesitant in trusting someone claiming to be Cross. Even then he stopped trying to kill them after Cross displayed some of his usual mannerisms.
I get the impression the reason why resurrecting Cross failed was because he was already in the process of being reincarnated as the Sage. His soul was already accounted for.

Wonder if he'll have better luck with the magician lady or priestess, who might have better magic detection + realize he's not just reading their minds.
I've been thinking about this. We as the readers know that Cross is still Cross, or at least we don't have reason to believe he was tampered with at this moment. His former party members don't and honestly can't ever really be sure that Cross IS their Cross. Someone could've just absorbed all his memories or his soul could've been tampered with without Cross's knowledge. Trusting that it is the real Cross is a big leap of faith. One I'm not sure I would be able to make in the same position.
