I've been thinking about this. We as the readers know that Cross is still Cross, or at least we don't have reason to believe he was tampered with at this moment. His former party members don't and honestly can't ever really be sure that Cross IS their Cross. Someone could've just absorbed all his memories or his soul could've been tampered with without Cross's knowledge. Trusting that it is the real Cross is a big leap of faith. One I'm not sure I would be able to make in the same position.
While this is true, given their dispositions, I suspect in that scenario some of them might nonetheless be happy to have a 'copy' of the deceased original, rather than not. Or like, there's a lot of pretty complex existential stuff ready to hand here, but, at the end of the day, you have to work with whatever you've got and make your choices based on what you
can know, I guess is what I'm saying?
If we're going to treat this seriously, though, this series already only makes any sense if the "sage's" power is something like unconscious compulsion or seduction, though? So that's a whole extra layer on top of that.
