There was an untitled LN I read back in the early 00's that had a typical ceremony you see so many times, but this kind of reminded me of it for some reason.
Similar ritual, boy from the slums with no parents or family is chosen by a set of gauntlets that are symbolic of an ancient arch-demon who was exiled from the underworld. He becomes the Arch-Demon's avatar and leader of his armies. The demon also tells the silly humans: "Those aren't sacred weapons you are giving to children. They are cursed weapons used by demons in a war that took place before humankin existed where they fought against the angels. They don't draw upon your magic, but rather devour your soul to empower them." The temple city is destroyed and the wars older than the humankin began, but instead of angels, the exiled demons and beasts were wiping out humanity.
