This is similar to Nikubami Honegishimi, where the aunt dies in the first chapter and the story flashes back twenty years to see how we got to that point, with all the looming dread of insight that it entails. Both that series and this one have pulled it off incredibly well, and I'm really excited to see how things turn out in this one.

I think it failing is actually the more interesting outcome. It keeps the momentum of the story (the MC is still in danger), raises the stakes (oh, so the protection of the gods isn't enough!), and now the imminent danger of the previous death (Ikeda) is even more keenly felt.
